Milverton: Choose Your Own Mystery

Time to investigate. It’s up to you! Choose your own mystery, sleuth…

Open notebook resting on a corkboard. Milverton. Choose your own mystery. You’ve been summoned to the small town of Milverton to settle an inheritance. You’d planned to be in and out, back to the city lickety-split, but the infuriating lawyer hasn’t finished the paperwork yet. He says to come back at the end of the day. What an absolute waste of time. You ask him why you’re even here if the documents aren’t ready yet. Turn to page 2. You recognise there’s no point in arguing, so you say you’ll come back later. Turn to page 3.

He asks if this rather significant inheritance is becoming too much of an imposition for you? Yes, actually. You have better things to be doing than hanging around all day. Turn to page 7. No, you suppose not. You’re here now so might as well see it through. Turn to page 3.

You head to Lynne’s Cafe for another coffee, then to the public library to get work done using their wifi while you wait. After a day hunched over your laptop dealing with emails and joining increasingly tedious conference calls, it’s time to face the lawyer again. Nah, you just can’t do it. You’ve already endured more than enough nonsense today and the desire to start your weekend is just too strong. Turn to page 7. What’s one more soul-sucking meeting? Might as well get it over with, then this whole thing will be sorted for good. Turn to page 4.

The receptionist isn’t there. The receptionist has clearly gone home for the day, and so should you. Turn to page 7. The light is still on in the lawyer’s office you visited that morning. You knock on the door and it creaks open at your touch. Turn to page 5.
Open notebook resting on a corkboard. Milverton. Choose your own mystery. Page 5. You announce yourself, but get no response. Maybe he has headphones on? Or he’s popped out to the toilet? Or he’s taking a little power nap? You knock again, but still get no response. Well, you tried. You went above and beyond, some might even say. But you’re not going to enter the lawyer’s office uninvited. Turn to page 7. The lawyer told you to be here, and so here you are. You slowly ease the door further open and step inside. Turn to page 6.

The office is unoccupied, and just as you remembered it from earlier in the day except for the desk, now strewn with documents. That’s when you spot the overturned shoe on the floor, poking out from the end of the desk. The old boy was taking a nap after all. You don’t want to embarrass him any further so decide to head back out. Turn to page 7. The lawyer wouldn’t be caught dead napping on the job. Who naps on the floor, anyway? You step around the desk. Turn to page 8.
Open notebook resting on a corkboard. Milverton. Choose your own mystery. Page 7. You say a silent farewell to Milverton and retrace your steps, catching a bus and then a train back to the capital. You’ll be back in time for your regular Friday night drinks with friends. After today’s very brief diversion, it’s back to life as normal for you. THE END.
Open notebook resting on a corkboard. Milverton. Choose your own mystery. Page 8. The lawyer is splayed out on his front. Nobody slept like that, not willingly. That’s when you see the lawyer’s head, twisted awkwardly and unnaturally to the side, eyes open and staring, lifeless. You stumble back and slam against a filing cabinet, losing your footing you crash to the floor. Your body’s instinctive reaction has kicked in long before you can process what you’re seeing. Turn to page 9.

Blood pounding in your ears and breaths coming in ragged gulps, you clamber to your feet, finally tearing your eyes from the scene as you stagger through the office door, out into the deserted foyer and beyond to the quiet street on the square. ‘Help,’ you say, your throat too dry for more than a hoarse whisper. You take a second, swallow, and then cry out. ‘Murder!’ Turn to page X.
