Answering for my (literary) crimes at One Book, One Community 2026

The good people of Masterton read Murder on Milverton Square during March as part of their ‘One Book, One Community’ event, and last night was interrogation time!

The wonderful Tiffany asked about my transition from geotechnical engineering to writing mysteries; what makes a cosy mystery ‘cosy’; about my writing routine; how I approach writing dialogue; about dealing with writer’s block and creative doubt; and about themes, inspiration, influences, and queer book recommendations.

Then we did a quick-fire round hitting on dream casting for Milverton, dining with the dead, Heated Rivalry, my TBR, my favourite childhood book, and my latest TV binge.

Finally, we discussed what I hoped readers would take away from my books and what one piece of advice I would offer aspiring writers before opening up the floor to audience questions.

A box of fancy local goodies

I felt very welcome and had the best time! I want to say a big thank you to the librarians of the Masterton District Library for their excellent work organising the evening, putting on a top-notch spread, and then sending me off with a box of even more local Wairarapa goodies. And to the people of Masterton for being so welcoming, for giving my books a go, and for coming in last night!

Murder on Milverton Square

Murder on Milverton Square (A Milverton Mystery) by G. B. Ralph. Cover image and description / blurb. Addison Harper is abruptly summoned to Milverton at the behest of an abrasive lawyer. He plans to be in and out, back to the city lickety-split. Instead, he finds himself charmed by the small town with its delightful and eccentric residents, not to mention the rather easy-on-the-eye Sergeant Jake Murphy. Despite the rocky start, Addison admits he’s had a pleasant day out. That is, until returning to find the prickly old lawyer on the floor, and very much dead. Worse, it looks like murder, and Addison’s fingerprints are all over the crime scene.
