Alastair Reynolds’ Revenger series is set in the far future where humanity has colonised worlds built from the debris of our solar system’s planets. The story follows two sisters who sign on with a crew of space-faring treasure hunters in order to bring in the coin their family needs to stave off bankruptcy. Their crew tracks down and cracks open mysterious, booby-trapped caches to salvage valuable technologies, relics and weaponry. Unfortunately though, they too are being hunted.
The series has space pirates, vengeance, bickering siblings, obsession, crooked characters, treasure, betrayal, financial ruin, communication through ancient alien skulls, and a shady line of succession. The quote from the Guardian used on the cover sums it up perfectly: ‘A swashbuckling thriller – Pirates of the Caribbean meets Firefly’.
The story of Adrana and Fura Ness is currently made up of Revenger and Shadow Captain (which I’ve just finished), with the third book in the series, Bone Silence, due for release in just under a month. They’re a fun read, and the intrigue really keeps the pages turning.
Earlier in the year I attended an author panel which included Alastair Reynolds, so I was able to pick up a copy of Shadow Captain and get it signed at the same time.
