AudioFile review: Poison at Penshaw Hall audiobook

Witty mysteries, awkward flirting, and merciless bossing are three of my favourite things, so it’s great to see each highlighted in this fantastic AudioFile Magazine review.

Our main man Addison gets a mention as the “endearing, sometimes bumbling amateur sleuth”, as does the “septuagenarian Mabel Zhou, who bosses him mercilessly.” And how could we forget the “hunky Sergeant Jake”?

I absolutely agree with the comment that the “quirky personalities and accents are enhanced through audio” which is all thanks to Philip Battley‘s wonderful reading of the Poison at Penshaw Hall audiobook.

POISON AT PENSHAW HALL. Milverton, Book 2, by G B Ralph, read by Philip Battley.

Mystery & Suspense. 7 hours. Unabridged. Copyright 2023.

Philip Battley narrates this witty mystery set in New Zealand in the zany manner it deserves. Listeners meet Addison Harper, an endearing, sometimes bumbling amateur sleuth who's just arrived in town to claim his inheritance of a house and a cat. The sculpture competition for the Terrific Town Award, which is marred by two deaths from a mysterious cocktail, is described with great spirit. While investigating, Addison meets well-rendered distillers, busybodies, know-it-alls, and, most delightfully, septuagenarian Mabel Zhou, who bosses him mercilessly. Listeners will roar with laughter as Addison stumbles upon clues and awkwardly flirts with hunky Sergeant Jake in the name of crime solving. The quirky personalities and accents are enhanced through audio, ensuring a pleasurable listen. S.G.B. © AudioFile 2025, Portland, Maine [Published: JANUARY 2025]

Poison at Penshaw Hall by G B Ralph. Book blurb:

Addison Harper is back, and with another dead body at his feet. Only this time, the entire town saw it happen.

Milverton is in the running for the Terrific Town Award, so a dramatic death at the opening ceremony is far from ideal. Addison had only been lending a hand, but now finds himself much more involved than he’d ever hoped. To think his biggest worry before had been his upcoming date with Sergeant Jake Murphy.

As for the sergeant, he can hardly ignore a hall full of witnesses even if he wanted to. And they’re all pointing the finger at his date, Milverton’s newest arrival, Addison Harper.
