RNZ National book review recording: Murder on Milverton Square

Author and book critic Catherine Robertson was on RNZ National Afternoons with Jesse Mulligan today celebrating local authors.

Catherine started the segment talking about the Romance Writers of New Zealand organisation turning 35 years old next month, and how the membership are such a generous and supportive group of writers.

She then went on to discuss three books by Kiwi authors. The first was the wonderfully titled Fangs For Nothing by Steffanie Holmes, featuring cosy mystery elements, a very raunchy romance, and a reclusive vampire. Next up was The Lost Saint by Rachael Craw, a young adult novel where the action is relentless, a real page-turner.

The third and final book Catherine reviewed was Murder on Milverton Square by G.B. Ralph (that’s me!). I picked out a few of my favourite and/or the most informative comments:

  • ‘Honestly, this book is freaking adorable.’
  • ‘I absolutely loved it.’
  • ‘Set in the Manawatū, in the fictional town of Milverton.’
  • ‘Wellingtonian and anxious gay millennial Addison Harper.’
  • ‘Addison decides to turn amateur sleuth to clear his name which sets him against the rather dishy local police sergeant Jake Murphy.’
  • ‘Lovely cosy shenanigans ensue.’
  • ‘A sheer delight from start to finish.’
  • ‘Loved it.’

Such a wonderful and generous book review! I’m so grateful to Catherine for taking a chance on Murder on Milverton Square, taking the time to read it, and then taking it a step further by telling everyone about it.

The segment is only 7 minutes and 35 seconds long and you can listen to a recording of the discussion for yourself on the RNZ website. It’s lots of fun and well worth a listen but if you want to jump straight to the chat about The Milverton Mysteries, that starts at about the 05:45 mark:

Murder on Milverton Square

Keen to find out more about the book? Or pick yourself up a copy? I’ve got you!

Murder on Milverton Square (A Milverton Mystery) by G. B. Ralph. Cover image and description / blurb. Addison Harper is abruptly summoned to Milverton at the behest of an abrasive lawyer. He plans to be in and out, back to the city lickety-split. Instead, he finds himself charmed by the small town with its delightful and eccentric residents, not to mention the rather easy-on-the-eye Sergeant Jake Murphy. Despite the rocky start, Addison admits he’s had a pleasant day out. That is, until returning to find the prickly old lawyer on the floor, and very much dead. Worse, it looks like murder, and Addison’s fingerprints are all over the crime scene.
