Konnichiwa to my first translated work! I’ve just received my stunning print copies in the post, along with some gorgeous bookmarks and a lovely note from the translator on an adorable postcard.

You can see me discussing the new release on TikTok or Instagram (the videos are both the same), or read on below…
‘The Sand Witch’s Sandwich’ has been translated by Tokyo-based Japanese-English translator Nona Umezawa, published by the Translation Sisters in their third issue of LETTERS UNBOUND which is centred around the theme of Food.

Their mission is to introduce foreign language authors to a Japanese audience, and I’m so pleased to be included alongside two other translated stories: ‘Waiting Out the End of the World in Patty’s Place Cafe’ by Naomi Kritzer and ‘Before the Valley’ by Rachel Heng.
I can’t read any of it, but I already know what happens in my story at least, so that’s OK. A wonderful surprise was this illustration of our heroine Ellie walking along the beach. Junya captured her so well!
‘The Sand Witch’s Sandwich’ tells the tale of a curious young girl, an eccentric old witch, and a capricious coastline. Pack your lunch and join Ellie as she clambers around the rocks to explore beyond the lighthouse. Be careful though, you never know what you might find…
If you’re ready to explore, you can also find Ellie’s story in the original English in The Law of Consequences anthology which was published last year and includes a total of twenty fantastical tales by some very talented authors:
